10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SHOTO TODOROKI

Shoto Todoroki is one of the most notable secondary characters in My Hero Academia. Since My Hero Academia is centered around a school where students are preparing to become full-time superheroes, it’s no surprise to learn that Shoto is one of them. Here are 10 things you may or may not know about Shoto Todoroki:

1. HIS NAME HAS A SPECIAL MEANING IN JAPANESE

signification nom shoto

Shoto contains the kanji for “burn” and “freeze”. This refers to its alters. Todoroki, on the other hand, is just a common Japanese surname, although it is interesting to note that it is written using a kanji that can mean either a “boom” or another “loud, rumbling noise”.

2. HIS APPEARANCE IS VERY DISTINCTIVE

On a related note, Shoto’s appearance is very distinctive, considering his hair is evenly divided between white hair on his right side and red hair on his left side. In addition, he has heterochromia, resulting in a gray eye on his right side and a turquoise eye on his left side. Again, these are references to his superpower. Amusingly, more than one person says that Shoto is one of the most beautiful characters in the series, but the manga style makes it difficult for readers to confirm this particular claim.

3. HE HAS A BURN SCAR ON HIS LEFT EYE

Steam Workshop::Avatar Zuko HD (ANIMATED)

Speaking of facial features, Shoto has a very visible burn scar on his left eye, which is one of the reasons why he has sometimes been compared to Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. In addition to that, the burn scar is an indication that Sho to’s upbringing was not very happy, or even the opposite because of his father Endeavor

4. IT HAS BOTH CRYOKINESIS AND PYROKINESIS

feu et givre todoroki

In general, the characters of My Hero Academia have two alters that can be used in different ways. Shoto has both cryokinesis and pyrokinesis, which can be used respectively by the left and the right side of his body.

5. HIS CONTROL OF HIS ALTER (GUESS WHICH ONE) IS NOT PERFECT

Like other characters in My Hero Academia, Shoto was not born with perfect control of his Alters, which means that he is still mastering them in the series. This can be seen in the way that his Frost Alter is much better than his pyrokinesis, which can be explained by the fact that he uses ice much more than fire due to his very difficult past with his father who only masters fire.

6. HIS ALTERS ARE SYNERGISTIC

shouto alter

That said, it is interesting to note that Shoto has since evolved in that he is now willing to use his pyrokinesis as well. This is beneficial because his two Alters are synergistic, an excellent example being how each can prevent him from getting too hot or too cold due to the use of the other.

7. HE IS VERY POWERFUL

shoto todoroki puissance

Overall, Shoto is considered the strongest student in his class. After all, he has two Alters, each of which would be powerful one by one, but would become even more so when he uses both in unison. In addition, Shoto is both strong and smart, which is enough to put him on par with some full-fledged Pro-Heros.

8. HE WAS RAISED TO BE POWERFUL

todoroki vs endeavor

Unfortunately, Shoto was designed to be powerful, which is not exactly a word with positive connotations when used for humans, but nevertheless very appropriate. In short, his father used his influence to force his mother to marry him in order to produce a child who would inherit both of their super powers. Shoto was the only child who met his father’s standards, so he was the one who began receiving brutal training from the age of 5 while his siblings were neglected by their father.

9. THE BURN ON HIS FACE IS NOT FROM HIS FATHER BUT FROM … HIS MOTHER!

todoroki cicatrice

Unlike his father, Shoto’s mother assured him that he could become whoever he wanted to be. She would interfere with his father’s brutal training even if it led to her being physically assaulted by Endeavor. Eventually, Shoto’s mother became mentally unstable, with the unfortunate result that when she was surprised by Shoto making a sudden appearance, she threw a kettle of boiling water because her left side reminded her of her father. She has since managed to get better to some extent after being admitted to a psychiatric ward.

10. HE SEEMS TO GET HIS VALUES FROM ALL MIGHT AND NOT FROM HIS FATHER

all might et shoto

There are some indications that Shoto gets his values as a potential pro-hero from the number one hero: All-Might, which he shares with a number of his classmates. That said, it is possible that this is rooted to some extent, as the reason his father wanted a child with two Alters was because he wanted someone who could outshine All-Might. Something that Shoto’s father failed to do, as evidenced by his long stay at the number two position!

  Page Options

If you have reasons to prevent certain functionality of the plugin on this page, you can use the options below. For instance, you found out that combining CSS files on this page is not working well and you want to disable it. Moreover, if Asset CleanUp is not working well for this page (e.g. it's in conflict with another plugin) and you want to avoid loading it, you can choose to do that as well.

If you are not sure how these options work, you can read more about them in the documentation.
